Clip description

Skipping class, Nick (Alex Dimitriades) flirts with Jodie (Abi Tucker) outside her science class window before teacher Bill Southgate (Tony Martin) sends Nick back to class. After school, Nick, whose line of credit is not good in Ruby’s (Jan Adele) café, asks his friends for advice on Jodie’s interests. However, his best efforts to impress are not a success, much to the amusement of his friends.

Curator’s notes

This segment introduces the early stages of the budding relationship between students Nick (Alex Dimitriades) and Jodie (Abi Tucker), the first in a constantly shifting series of romantic dramas throughout the series. Executive producer Ben Gannon comments in an interview on the Heartbreak High website on the importance of balancing relationship-based drama and ‘issues’ in the series:

Dealing with issues, it’s possible to get into this rut of 'What’s the issue this week?’. If you can’t come out with the right thing, you tend to make something very soapy, and that was always something we were trying to avoid … When you have relationships in these shows, when everyone is really happy it’s not very interesting – so you always have to break them up. You have to.

Several members of the creative team were later reunited on Wildside (1997–99): Ben Gannon, director Michael Jenkins, writer Kris Wyld and actors Alex Dimitriades, Coco Salvatore and Tony Martin.
