Clip description
Escaping from the ‘Hide and Seek’ gang, Eugénie (Xaris Miller) and Warwick (Matthew Vennell) run into her father Ray Sandler (Brett Climo). When he discovers Detective Gurney (Martin Jacobs) is after them, he sends them to Alloway House. The mystery deepens when they are followed by strange Russian men who know Eugénie’s name.
Curator’s notes
There are some terrific shots in the two very different chase sequences in this clip. The first half is slightly more serious film noir, with the old factory setting, wire fences and the lonely, abandoned street kid Tony metaphorically ‘trapped’ behind the bars. This is followed by a slapstick ‘baddies’ sequence in front of the factory. The arrival of the crooked Detective Gurney is a detective thriller spoof, followed by a Russian Laurel and Hardy act with the stereotyped bumbling ‘spies’ – Davorin and Slavomir. This clip also has a Get Smart (1965-70) cold war, spy parody feel about it, especially in the last half.
