Clip description
This clip begins with a montage that fills in the backstory from episode one, showing Eugénie’s gumshoe dad Ray (Brett Climo) escaping through a Russian forest and discovering a baby girl in the back seat of his car. Eugénie (Xaris Miller) doesn’t know about her mysterious past, so it doesn’t make sense to her when her father disappears and Detective Matt Gurney (Martin Jacobs) begins asking her strange questions about ‘Versovia’. Then she discovers that she and her friend Warwick (Matthew Vennell) are in great danger.
Curator’s notes
The montage at the beginning of this clip works as an exciting and action-packed introduction to this teen spy thriller, and also helps create significant connections – between Eugénie and the Soviet baby, the dishonest Detective Matt Gurney and the radio-controlled explosive device, and Gurney’s link with the mysterious Versovia. This, combined with interesting camera angles, heart-pounding thriller music and the innovative use of split-screen which was later to become so characteristic of overseas adult thriller series like 24 (US, 2008), and Spooks (UK, 2008), creates an intriguing, ‘want to watch more’ introduction.
