Magic realism in South America

Original classification rating: PG. This clip chosen to be PG

Clip description

Rolf de Heer was the director of a troubled co-production with a French producer for the film The Old Man Who Read Love Stories with fine performances from Richard Dreyfuss and Hugo Weaving. In the studio, David Stratton and Margaret Pomeranz discuss the film and both give it four stars.

Curator’s notes

According to Margaret and David, this film was actually completed before Rolf de Heer’s The Tracker although released long afterwards. Rolf de Heer usually writes his own material but in this case the film is adapted from a book by Luis Sepúlveda. The presenters are in agreement and both really love the film and find the performance of Richard Dreyfuss quite electrifying.

The reviewers comment that Rolf de Heer is often attracted to the character of the outsider in his films and this is no exception. Antonio Bolivar (played by Richard Dreyfuss) is very much in that tradition. Both Margaret and David are complimentary about the performance of Dreyfuss who hasn’t been seen on our screens in recent times and are full of praise for de Heer who has managed to pull off a terrific film despite all the set backs.
