Clip description
Margaret and David disagree about a new Irish-British co-production called Evelyn, directed by Australian Bruce Beresford.
Curator’s notes
For those who think that Margaret’s the softie and David the tough critic, it’s exactly the reverse in this case. Margaret is not impressed with Evelyn nor Beresford’s directing skills and the two fight it out on air rather like a couple that’ve just seen a movie together discussing it over dinner afterwards. It’s good television, and their views, whether in agreement or not, are always thoughtful about the production skills, the screenplay and the performances. They are both well informed about screen culture and screen history, so their show is always informative even when they review second-rate films. In this case, Margaret will give Evelyn two stars and David three and a half.
