Clip description

Zane Malik (Don Hany) and Ray Crowley (William McInnes) clash after a stand-off with a suspect goes wrong. At home, Malik helps his father Rahman Malik (Taffy Hany) after he has an accident. Malik and his mother Mariam (Irini Pappas) reflect on the man who left Rahman brain-damaged after a bungled robbery, and who has never been caught.

Malik’s relationship with his father provides clues to his motivation for becoming a policeman. While maverick detectives are often portrayed as loners, Malik has strong connections with family and community.

In part, series one of East West 101 is a meditation on the desire for revenge and Malik’s search for his father’s attacker is one of its main serial storylines.

The real-life father-son acting team of Don and Taffy Hany arose after difficulties finding a suitable Arabic-speaking actor. Taffy Hany, a non-actor, stepped into the pivotal role.
