Clip description

Ray Crowley (William McInnes) plans a raid on the home of a suspect in the police shooting. After Zane Malik (Don Hany) makes contact with the suspect, he tries to talk his colleagues into taking a different approach. Malik’s boss Patricia Wright (Susie Porter) gives him ten hours to find the suspect his way – otherwise they will go ahead with the raid.

Here we see Malik prepared to go beyond the call of duty to do what he believes is right. Again, the conflict arises over the question of whether to work with or against the community and is exacerbated by Crowley’s hostility, as he talks about Malik’s ‘buddy Arab mates’.

East West 101 employs some distinctive cinematography and editing. The flashbacks and dream sequences peppered throughout the series use saturated colour and extreme angles. The observational depiction of urban environments and its frenetic, fast-paced action scenes are reminiscent of Wildside (1997–99). Alongside this, less action-oriented scenes have a more composed style.

Guy Gross’s score propels the action and emotion here and emphasises Malik’s identity by drawing on Middle Eastern motifs. Gross won an APRA–AGSC Award for his work on the series.
