Clip description

Peter Rose recalls that his younger brother Bobby Rose Junior began to show his flair for football from an early age. It was always assumed that both boys would follow their father into the Collingwood Club to play football.

Curator’s notes

This is a well-crafted series, and this clip expertly uses Peter Rose, now a writer, to give us a unique and insightful look into the life of an Australian family of the 1960s dominated by sport.

Growing up in the public eye, and with all the expectations that come of being born into a sporting family, can have dire consequences for a young person. The Rose family was a sporting dynasty but still able to accept that Peter Rose was not a sportsman but a gifted poet and writer. He later came out as a homosexual and wrote a book about his extraordinary family, called The Rose Boys.
