An attempted break-in at the mill is foiled by security guard Les Stanford (Ken Snodgrass). The following day Detectives ‘JJ’ Jeffrey Johnson (Peter Adams) and Mike Georgiou (John Orcsik) investigate. Mill owner Ralph Kingston (Roger Newcombe) and his employees Peter Lang (Mel Gibson), Maureen Hamilton (Joanne Samuel) and Rod Conway (Stephen Bisley) are at the scene.
Curator’s notes
Establishing a community of suspects around a crime is a common approach in crime fiction and television crime drama. This scene sets the ball rolling by placing all the key players at the crime scene. The audience is in the position of knowing slightly more than the detectives as we watch them investigate. While we do not know who tried to break in, earlier scenes have introduced Hamilton’s romantic involvement with both Kingston and Lang.
The year after they guest starred in this episode, Mel Gibson, Joanne Samuel and Steve Bisley also appeared together in Mad Max (1979).
