Clip description
Johnno (Damien Walters) is checking his hearing aid when the local bus arrives, bringing a newcomer to the town. It is Tony (Joe Petruzzi), the Italian migrant, eager to begin a new life in Australia. Intrigued, Johnno follows Tony to the jetty.
Curator’s notes
Johnno watches the affectionate exchange between the two Italian men in amazement. Their animated conversation, the hugs and warmth contrast with Johnno’s uptight father Frank, who shows no affection, only anger.
The homesick Tony greets Johnno cordially but Johnno is wary and doesn’t respond. The scene ends with a lovely wide shot in which the two lonely figures are dwarfed in the landscape as Johnno walks out of the shot, leaving Tony alone on the jetty.
