Clip description
Johnno (Damien Walters) releases crabs from their traps which angers the fishers. His sister Julie (Rebecca Sykes) tries to protect Johnno but his father (John Waters) is furious.
Curator’s notes
This clip introduces Johnno and his family, and the place and time in which they live. Johnno’s affinity with the water and his love of crabs is highlighted — in the water he is free and happy, and hearing is not important. Gradually we understand that Johnno is deaf and see how much he relies on Julie. We learn that Julie is soon going away, something that Johnno doesn’t yet know. The scene also shows the conflict between Johnno and his father, and Johnno’s father’s frustration with, and lack of understanding of his son.
