Curator’s notes
This sequence is a good example of how the 1980s transformed Australian television, bringing local stories and culture to the small screen. The unmistakably Australian setting, characters (complete with 1980s-style work shorts and blue singlets), language and sense of humour – based on egalitarian values and giving the boss a hard time – are on display here. The opening sequence also sets up the small community of Butterfly Island and surrounds, where business is mixed with pleasure and social interaction.
