Clip description

Andrea Stretton is talking to Peter Carey. He is visiting Australia from his home in New York where his latest book, The Tax Inspector (1991), has just been published to rave reviews. The interview discusses whether getting some distance is a help or a hindrance in writing a novel with a strong sense of place.

Curator’s notes

Peter Carey is one of the world’s great contemporary novelists. At the time of this interview with Andrea Stretton, he has already won the Booker prize for Oscar and Lucinda (1988) and he would win it again for True History of the Kelly Gang (2001). In Australia he’s won the prestigious Miles Franklin Award for War Crimes (1979), Bliss (1981), Oscar and Lucinda (1988) and Jack Maggs (1997).

This Book Show interview takes place in Sydney with high-rise buildings all around, reminding us of his new life in the most famous metropolis of all, New York, where he moved in 1990. Andrea Stretton is very knowledgeable about his work and the interview is relaxed in style but very informative.
