Clip description

The Leyland Brothers respond to a reader’s question about the size of Uluru (Ayres Rock) and interview visitors climbing the rock.

Curator’s notes

Ask The Leyland Brothers is at its most entertaining when the team interview people. Some of their interviewees are famous, others are not, and the array of attitudes they encounter around the country creates a snapshot of the time.

The collection of characters climbing the rock here – and their responses to the question ‘why climb?’ – on one hand have comic impact. On the other, they reflect how public attitudes and awareness around Uluru have changed since the series was produced. Although the Leylands discuss restricted areas containing sacred sites around the rock’s base, there is no mention of the climb itself being problematic. Today there is wider public awareness that the rock itself is also home to sacred sites and Uluru’s Indigenous owners do not want visitors to climb it.
