Changes in the school yard

Original classification rating: PG. This clip chosen to be PG

Clip description

We see some of the unusual class activities at Hunter Sports High School in NSW, which has been making changes in an effort to turn around high rates of truancy and suspensions. The principal is interviewed about the problematic behaviour of boys who were not engaging in learning. The successful program of changes at the school is being reported on at a conference of teachers, academics and researchers in Melbourne.

Curator’s notes

The reporter, Natasha Johnson, was tasked with reporting on a conference of teachers, academics and researchers in Melbourne, a potentially dry subject. She created a lively and engaging story by selecting one of the programs being discussed at the conference, and filming material in the school to illustrate it, thus bringing the story to life. The filming itself is stylish and pacy, and the result is an informative and inspiring story of an educational success.

The 7.30 Report is introduced every evening by Kerry O’Brien, the anchorman or compere, and he hooks the audience into this story with some startling statistics. He tells us that boys dominate in all the worst statistics including suicide, accident and imprisonment, all attributed by researchers to poor education. This show is typical of the program, with magazine style items, both studio segments and filmed stories from out in the field.
