Clip description

This clip, shot in Malaysia (then Malaya), shows cave and tunnel formations, and details the difficulties of negotiating the local swamps.

Curator’s notes

The first part of the clip is shot in some of Malaysia’s famous limestone hills with their caves and crevices – from a 1964 military perspective, potential hiding places for guerrillas. It covers roads and vehicle access, as well as the challenges to troop movement and operations posed by swamps and jungle and their various forms of vegetation, including the Nypa or mangrove palm.
