Clip description
As the waters of Lake Jindabyne, part of the Snowy Mountains Scheme, rise, the townspeople say goodbye to old Jindabyne and the new Jindabyne is officially opened.
Curator’s notes
New Jindabyne was opened on 19 December 1964 by Sir Eric Woodward, Governor of NSW. The clip features the official opening and the townspeople’s own distinctive commemoration of the event, as well as a look at the new town. The architecture of the new commercial buildings, houses and churches contrasts starkly with the buildings of the old town, featured earlier in the film.
Clearing the path for the rising dam waters, a demolition team remove large trees and the army blows up the town’s old bridge over the Snowy River.
