Curator’s notes

HMAS Stuart, a type 12 anti submarine frigate or destroyer escort, was constructed for the RAN at Cockatoo Island Dockyard and was laid down on 20 March 1959. It was launched on 8 April 1961. It left Sydney Harbour early in August 1962 to take part in the first sea trials of Ikara, which began the following year. Stuart was the first ship in the RAN to be fitted with the Ikara weapon system, and was commissioned on 27 June 1963.
