Clip description
The clip shows newly constructed supply and drainage ditches; a wheel which measures the quantity and supply of water to the irrigation blocks; water ditches; lush pastures made possible by planned irrigation; grazing livestock including sheep, cattle and pigs; and men bailing up stacks of hay. A male voice-over announces that the Department of Agriculture and the Rural Bank want to ‘help you improve your pastures’. Information leaflets and field officers from the Department of Agriculture can provide advice for farmers and agriculturalists. The clip ends with the voice-over saying that the future development of primary industries depends on better pastures because improved pastures leads to ‘improved stock’, ‘more produce’ and ‘increased capacity’.
Curator’s notes
This clip is from the final section of a film, which is a fairly dry survey of agriculture and irrigation in the pastures of New South Wales. It is in these closing moments that the underlying message surfaces – that in order to improve pasture land and contribute to the prosperity of the nation, the Rural Bank of New South Wales and the Department of Agriculture are there to support and assist the men on the land to achieve their goals.
