Clip description
Out of town visitors come to see the floral displays in private gardens across the city. Sweeping pans of the gardens and close ups of flowers show just some of the gardens on display and in competition. The ‘champion house garden of 1953’ is shown, along with the first prized garden for the open garden section.
Curator’s notes
The musical score, in this clip especially, is upbeat and typical of what one might expect in a light-hearted feature film of the time. For the contemporary viewer, this care-free atmosphere creates a sort of 1950s suburban utopia where residents happily open their neat and colourful home gardens for display, partake in the friendly carnival atmosphere and where every day is filled with blue skies.
Today, lush floral gardens, as seen in this clip, are a thing of the past. Toowoomba, like many parts of the country, is in severe drought and level five water restrictions, which came into effect in 2006, have made a direct impact on Carnival of Flowers garden displays.
