Curator’s notes
Once commonly known as postmen, and the career aspiration of many a young boy, Australia Post’s postal delivery officers in 1989 had become a diverse collection of men and women, young and old; delivering mail to commercial and residential premises, in urban and rural situations, on foot and on motorcycles. The clip shows this range of activities and includes interviews with delivery officers who discuss the pros and cons of the job. The footage is a convincing reminder that despite developments in communication technology, the hand delivered message is today, as it was in 1989, a long way from being a thing of the past.
