Clip description
This clip shows the workings of the postal and telephone services in the Olympic Village at Heidelberg, during the 1956 Melbourne Olympic games.
Curator’s notes
Interpreter services were among the postal and telecommunications services provided to the Olympic Games by the PMG. As the commentary states, the telephone interpreter services and interpreter services provided at the post office in the athletes’ village, were the most comprehensive ever offered at an Olympic Games. The clip illustrates in detail the telephone interpreter service being used by an athlete in the Olympic Village. Other material shot in the Village features athletes from all parts of the world – including Australian swimmer Faith Leech. At the Melbourne Games Faith Leech won a bronze medal in the 100 metres freestyle and a gold medal in the 4 × 100 freestyle relay.
