Clip description

This clip juxtaposes the sounds of heavy breathing, a party with male voices and wolf whistling against the images of women’s faces, a bedroom with a woman in bed, and the ground outside, setting up a tension that leads to a beer bottle violently smashing a fleshy watermelon.

Curator’s notes

This clip is very powerful in evoking the insecurity and fears that women have of male violence towards them. The unforgettable image of a watermelon being smashed by a beer bottle with a police radio on the soundtrack is every woman’s nightmare. However, the clip, like the film itself, doesn’t leave us feeling frightened and powerless. The filmmakers follow the scene by shouting that they won’t be intimidated and are determined to change the power relationship inherent in capitalism and sexual politics.
