Clip description

Having sold his millionth nail, Uncle (voiced by John Flaus) retires from his hardware store. He and his wife become surrogate parents to their nephew (narrator William McInnes). After Aunt dies, Uncle relies on his dog Reg for company. In his retirement, Uncle spends a lot of time in the backyard and boasts that he has ‘the best lemon tree in the street’ because he urinates on it every full moon.

Curator’s notes

Elliot gives us a loving picture of a gentle, tolerant relative whose eccentricities are funny and endearing. This sequence is a prelude to Uncle’s unfolding story, that of a man with simple yet ingenuous ways and homespun wisdom.
