A lifelong ritual

Original classification rating: G. This clip chosen to be G

Clip description

Through illness, adolescence, travel, married life and old age, a woman (voiced by Arianthe Galani) recalls a lifelong ritual, started by her father when she was a baby, of taking a picture of herself every other day.

Curator’s notes

We see neither the self-portraits that are our anonymous narrator’s subject matter, nor the moments in her life that she describes. Nonetheless, the images on screen illustrate the woman’s story. This section of the film also contains the only glimpse of the woman’s photos we are afforded – teasingly, it is the part where she is sick in hospital and we see only an empty chair.

As the woman describes her relationship with her self-portraits throughout her life, they gain the status of a diary, something personal and private – although visual, rather than verbal. Her relationship with her self-portraits provides insights into her relationships with people. In particular, a touching portrait of a father-daughter connection emerges.
