Clip description
An elderly Aboriginal woman, Laurel Cooper, tells the story of her birth and early life in the bush and her mother’s attempts to keep her concealed from the police troopers by darkening her skin.
Curator’s notes
An elderly Aboriginal woman revisits the painful memories of her childhood, as the illegitimate child of a white man. This includes her experience of being blackened with charcoal and shoe polish by her mother to disguise any sign of her whiteness.
