Clip description

A woman (voiced by Julie Forsyth) reflects on the view from her balcony in the Melbourne suburb of St Kilda.

Curator’s notes

Pleasure Domes is built around a personal monologue, which invokes a landscape infused with imagination, memory, history and visions of places far away. The fluid nature of both image and soundtrack enhance these imaginary, contemplative qualities.

Fooke’s images shift from the abstract to the particular, as though moments in history or imaginary moments reveal themselves briefly in the landscape. In an interesting inversion, in this drawn world historical photographs signify imagined moments rather than documentary record. A textured soundscape, combining music and environmental sounds, completes the picture.
