Clip description

In this section, Palermo: ‘History’ Standing Still catches up with itself. It represents 1999, the year the film’s footage was shot.

Curator’s notes

There is a stronger emphasis on street life than architecture in this section, though decaying posters on the walls for 1998’s provincial elections already seem to represent history. Many shots, including shots of people, are repeated from earlier sections – and we see again the ubiquitous old woman hanging washing and the man announcing the date. Signs of change include glimpses of an encroaching media culture – film crews on the street and concert posters on walls.
