You can watch the short film One Shoe Short here in its entirety. Rodney (Rodney Malbunka) can’t find his shoes. As he needs them to go to school, his friend Jesse (Jesse McCormack) helps as best he can.
Curator’s notes
The film is mostly silent. Although told with minimal dialogue the story is powerfully conveyed, particularly through the performance by Jesse McCormack.
The production grew out of a clown workshop writer and director Jackie van Beek was running in Alice Springs. There is certainly a sense of the community’s point of view and involvement here. It seems van Beek’s experience with the community inspired her to challenge dominant views of Aboriginal people in remote communities. She said she 'wanted to show the kids in a positive light. It’s an upbeat empowering film, showing the kids as smart and funny.’
