Curator’s notes
In this whimsical sequence, music proves to be an escape from individual constraint as well as from a natural disaster. The animated drawings provide a delightful visual image of the poem’s ‘crazy gable’ in which Miss Costello, wearing a dressing gown, her long hair flying and surrounded by her pet cats, plays her cello with abandon on her rooftop as the floodwaters swirl beneath her.
