Clip description
At a loose end, Beau takes a stroll through the streets of Rimside.
Curator’s notes
As Beau does some ‘people watching’ – or in this case, bike watching – the film takes a moment out from the romance storyline to have fun with the premise of a world populated by bicycle characters. Goode and his team explore the ways bicycle design can stretch to suggest character types like the goth, the breakdancer and the owner who matches their pet.
They also throw in gags like the rusty bicycle collecting charity for ‘rust-relief’ and the cinema screening Pump Friction and BMX Bandits 2. The juggling busker tricycle is a nod to the Pixar film Red’s Dream (1987). In keeping with the premise of bikes-as-people, Rimside is a non-organic environment that simulates an organic one, with metallic trees, skateboard dogs and birds made from bicycle bells.
This sequence also sets the scene for Beau’s second accidental meeting with his crush, as he trips over a manhole from which he will shortly have an opportunity to rescue her.
