Clip description

The animated short Dad’s Clock is narrated by Barry Otto and can be seen here in full. A giant metal bird flies towards the wooden skeleton of a ship on a wooden slatted sea. Inside the ship is the timber figure of a man making a wooden clock. The bird returns a number of times to assist.

Curator’s notes

Dad’s Clock is a moving depiction of the complex emotions experienced by a son (the bird) who achieves reconciliation with his father (the timber man) and his family at the time of his father’s death. The son’s guilt, associated with the death of a younger brother before he was born, and his sense of isolation from the family’s sorrow are overcome when the father’s ashes are buried with those of his dead son. The visual imagery of this film – both complex and stunning – is a testament to the art of puppet animation.
