A montage of clips from The Back of Beyond (1954), Picnic at Hanging Rock (1975), Bluebird project footage, Gallipoli (1981), The Squatter’s Daughter (1933) and The Chain Reaction (1980) are accompanied by an audio montage of fragmentary readings.
Curator’s notes
This clip encapsulates Gibson’s intent to avoid simply illustrating, in a kind of slideshow, pre-existing ideas about landscape on the Australian screen. The clips are linked by a series of cuts on action – a startling passage of montage which makes both formal and conceptual connections. Australian film history becomes, in Gibson’s words, ‘a dream play of images’.
