Curator’s notes
This sequence establishes the initially fragile relationship between Pino and his son Peter, revealing the importance of the loss of wife and mother to them both. Peter is also unhappy with the fact that Pino’s day-to-day life revolves around money, which is portrayed comically, while Peter’s is a more fastidious world of education.
Low angles and noirish lighting accentuate the threat to the father-son relationship, although there is hope of an underlying forgive-and-forget bond between them.
