Cartoons of the Moment – Today the German Monster Threatens the World (c.1916)

  1. I first saw this rather spooky cartoon in the 1960s BBC TV series The Great War and I didn't know it was Australian in origin! Some of the parts that have been lost due to decomposition are in this TV series. It's an eerie cartoon that has a slightly Pythonesque quality to both its animation and its sentiments. In the film you see the monster bringing its fist down on the Lusitania and kicking down a French town. However, the Germans in the Second World War were much worse than those of the Kaiser's Germany and in 1939-45 there was no need for slightly childish films like this.
