Australasian Gazette – Test Cricketers (c.1926)

Synopsis

This newsreel from about 1926 shows the Australian cricket team while on tour in England. It features MA Noble, Clem Hill, Arthur Mailey, Warren Bardsley, WM Woodfull and the English cricketer Jack Hobbs. Filmed at Headingley Oval, England it shows highlights from a cricket match and close-ups of the cricketers themselves. Percy Fender, noted English cricketer, films the press photographers.

Curator’s notes

Newsreels were an integral part of cinema programming in Australia before the advent of television in 1956. Issued on a weekly basis, newsreels enabled people to further engage with local and national political stories and events.
