'Passing the Bach'

Clip description

This is 'Passing the Bach’, the opening track on the Don Burrows Quartet’s seminal jazz album ‘Just the Beginning’ (1971).

Curator’s notes

In the 1960s and early ’70s there was a trend to use classical music as the starting point for jazz music and improvisation. This was in the vein of jazz musician Jacques Loussier, who recorded the music of Bach.

While Bach gives ‘Passing the Bach’ some structure, it is Burrows’s sensuous and breathy flute, complemented by Golla’s effortless guitar and the precise bass and drums, that gives the piece its sumptuous and vibrant sound.
