This clip shows troops from the Malayan Volunteer Corps marching in formation from their barracks to a parade ground.
Curator’s notes
This clip features members of the 4th Battalion of the Straits Settlements Volunteer Force as they parade through the streets of Malacca. White films from an elevated position as the troops cross the bridge and come around the corner.
The SSVF consisted of volunteers from the Straits settlements of Penang, Malacca and Singapore. Thousands of volunteers joined the Malayan Volunteer Corps to assist the British in major conflicts during the 19th and early 20th centuries.
In other parts of this home movie, White filmed Malay Chinese troops in training at a base in Tanjong Bruas, Malacca.
