Clip description

The American tourists walk out of the entrance to the Federal Hotel in Melbourne and get into an awaiting car. A porter carries their bags and loads them in the back, while the driver closes the door.

At their destination, a man opens the door for them and they emerge from the car. One of the men carries a 16 mm camera and begins to film the person filming the footage.

A hired plane awaits them on an airfield. Three men and three women board the plane while the pilot gets into the cockpit to prepare for takeoff.

Curator’s notes

This home movie effectively uses dissolves to convey the passing of time or to move the action forward.

Home movies often provide an historical record of the architecture of the times. In the opening seconds of this clip, we can glimpse the entrance to Melbourne’s Federal Hotel, which was demolished in 1973.

Thanks to the generosity of the rights holders, we are able to offer On their journey from the home movie These American Tourists Leave Melbourne After Breakfast as a high quality video download.
