Clip description

This clip begins with colour footage of a Victorian beach and coastline. The following scenes in black-and-white show flooded countryside and timber forests in the Marysville district, scenic shots of Stephenson Falls, Robarts Lookout and Cumberland Falls. Voice-over narration is spoken by Frank Straford.

Curator’s notes

In The SBF Story (2007), Frank Straford explains that the film used a mixture of colour and black-and-white film stocks due to cassette problems. This restriction forced the brothers to think carefully about which scenes would look better shot in colour, and which would benefit from black-and-white. The black-and-white stock used to film the burnt timber forest certainly highlights its stark beauty. The post-synched voice-over was recorded using an adapted full track reel-to-reel tape recorder.

The original film was transferred to DVD, as part of a compilation of Straford family films, before it was deposited in the National Film and Sound Archive. This clip was taken from the compilation and is presented as it appears on the DVD.
