Clip description
This clip begins with shots of the Taj Mahal and the extensive surrounding gardens in Agra, India. This is followed by two snake charmers, one of whom plays music to a cobra while the other holds a python in his hands. A young boy plays with the snake baskets nearby. A third man arrives and takes over from one of the snake charmers, and is filmed with a ferret and another small snake.
Curator’s notes
Travel can overload the senses. Minter’s camera in this clip aims to capture the colour and movement of Indian rituals and people. His India is a vibrant country of many traditions and social customs outside the normal European experience. Later in this home movie, Minter travels to Greece and Italy where his camera films the surrounding environment in a more restrained and straightforward way. In Europe, his focus is the architecture, whereas in India, Burma and Thailand (clip one), Minter films more of the people and their way of life.
