Clip description

This clip shows the Blue Moon Café in Canberra’s Sydney Building in the 1950s. It includes scenes inside the café at the confectionery counter, the milk bar, and the Greek owners (members of the Cassidy and Gerakiteys families) gathered outside the café.

Curator’s notes

The Blue Moon Café was one of the few places in the city you could go for a meal in the 1950s. As well as the confectionery counter and milk bar, it is possible to glimpse the dining booths inside the café. At the time this was filmed, Emmanuel Gerakiteys ran the café in partnership with Greek brothers Spyros and Peter Cassidy . The Cassidys and the Gerakiteys were just two of the many Greek families who immigrated to Canberra from the 1930s onwards and contributed to local public life.
