Clip description

This silent, colour home movie shows the Dimpel family enjoying a sunny afternoon at the local public swimming pool. They are swimming in the wading pool, surrounded by lush lawns.

Curator’s notes

The outdoor Manuka Swimming Pool was built in 1930 and was the first public pool built in Canberra. It consists of a main rectangular pool enclosed by a pavilion, and an adjacent circular wading pool surrounded by lawns and recreational spaces.

The brightly coloured beach ball that the children play with against the backdrop of blue sky and green grass gives this home movie a nostalgic feel and a sense of an idealised suburban childhood.
