Hula show, Hawaii

Original classification rating: not rated. This clip chosen to be G

Clip description

This performance by Hawaiian dancers is part of a hula show staged for tourists and sponsored by Kodak. This clip shows the last half of the performance and the applauding crowd at the end.

Curator’s notes

The relationship between tourism and local economies is complex. This segment illustrates that relationship beautifully, as Bresnahan bookends it with brief shots of the seated crowd. These shots, as well as the sponsorship of the performance by Kodak, emphasise the aspects of packaged tourism concerned with delivering a self-contained (and often constructed) experience of culture.
