Clip description
Local Javanese and Europeans are gathered around two Rolls Royce vehicles which are loaded with the travelling party’s belongings. Javanese villagers are filmed walking along a road and washing at a water fountain. The tropical terrain is also shown.
Curator’s notes
A large family inheritance allowed Beckwith to travel extensively and in luxury throughout Asia and Europe in the 1930s. The motor vehicles in this clip were purchased, along with his camera equipment, before he embarked on this trip.
Thanks to the generosity of the rights holders, we are able to offer Java in the 1930s from the home movie Balinese Holiday as a high quality video download.
