Clip description

This clip from a home movie begins with a title card, then cuts to four men wearing armour and riding horses. Next is a wide shot of the Aboriginal float, a float commemorating the First Fleet, a Governor Philip float, a float decorated in flowers and marching bands.

Curator’s notes

This clip is taken from one angle. Dr Murray-Will used in-camera edits by simply turning his camera on and off. The camera remains in the one position although Dr Murray-Will has included panning shots and uses a zoom.

Aboriginal political organisations in Sydney refused to participate in the anniversary celebrations so a group of Aboriginal men were removed from an Aboriginal reserve to help re-enact the arrival of the First Fleet in Port Jackson. Although the re-enactment is not captured in this home movie, it is important to note that the representations of Aboriginal culture and history in the parade captured in this clip, were designed and performed without open participation of the Aboriginal community.
