Clip description

Members of the team practise batting in the nets at Lords Cricket Ground. Players smile for, and walk past, the camera. A pan of the bowlers practising in the nets is followed by more players captured casually in close up. The clip ends with a shot of the whole team dressed in their creams.

Curator’s notes

Many of the players smile or laugh at the camera (including a cheeky Bradman) and a number of them appear to be casually replying to Kelly’s off-camera prompts. Contemporary images of cricketers practicing in the nets and having a joke around are common in sports coverage today, as sportsmen have learned how to ‘show off’ for the media. The beauty of this footage comes from the fact that is it one of the earliest examples of truly candid moments of cricketers enjoying themselves while at practice.

Players filmed standing in close up are, most likely, (in sequence): Don Bradman (who walks up to the camera before pausing in front of it), Clarrie Grimmett, Bill Woodfall, Archie Jackson, Vic Richardson (twice), Percy Hornibrook, Stan McCabe, and Charlie Walker (with Bradman in the background).
