Clip description

This actuality footage shows the unloading of materials from the SS Katoomba at a busy wharf in Brisbane. Men unload large sacks and crates onto trolleys and wheel them down a gangway off the ship. In the foreground, workers use ropes and pulleys to transport timber spars onto land.

Curator’s notes

Pinkenba, where this footage is believed to have been shot, is an industrial and residential suburb of Brisbane. Pinkenba was the place of embarkation for Boer War troops in 1899 (see Boer War Transvaal Contingent, 1899).

This footage of materials being unloaded off a ship complements Wills’s other footage of boats – see Government Party Boards SS Lucinda and North Shore Steam Ferry (both 1899).
