The annual picnic

Clip description

Honoured guests gather at Maryborough train station as hundreds of children from the Burnett district pack the carriages for the trip to Scarness. As the camera pans along, many of the children smile and wave flags at the camera. At Scarness, trains begin to arrive from the surrounding regions as the small platform quickly fills with people. One member of the crowd is ‘ringed’ in a still frame and an intertitle announces that this person is eligible for a cash prize. As the crowds move along the station platform, some of the older boys turn and wave to the camera.

Curator’s notes

The honoured guests at the annual picnic included Mr CA Merton (Commissioner for Railways) and his family, Mr TE Maloney (General Manager of Queensland Railways), Mr F McCrystal (District Superintendent) and Mr D Smyth (Chief Station Master at Maryborough). The children are waving flags supplied by the Maryborough Railway. They were also given ice-creams at the end of the day.

The railway line at Scarness closed in 1994.
