clip A threatening stranger

Original classification rating: M. This clip chosen to be PG

Clip description

Fiona (Radha Mitchell) and Ben (Joel Edgerton) are visiting a Hindu temple. As they watch a woman praying to the goddess of fertility and motherhood, Ben is approached by Scarlett (Isabel Lucas), a beautiful young woman who knows him from the recording industry. He invites her to meet them for a drink at their hotel. Fiona seems worried that her husband is being so friendly with this attractive stranger.

Curator’s notes

The introduction of the beautiful Scarlett is a pivotal moment in the narrative that a few scenes later will trigger a crisis in Fiona and Ben’s relationship. Ben’s bumping into Scarlett could not happen at a more sensitive and inappropriate moment. Fiona is an impending adoptive mother who the audience assumes is probably infertile; the sight of an Indian woman praying for a child obviously deeply moves her. Yet Ben seems more interested in this attractive, younger Australian woman. Fiona’s jealous response is given added impetus by the situation.
